A few days ago it was widely rumoured that the US might be expanding the Laptop ban to include flights from Europe to the US. It was meant to be announced last Thursday but nothing was officially announced although Delta did start displaying signs about the ban.
It turns out that the FAA and EASA were arguing over the ban with EASA strongly against it from a safety point of view. They did not like the idea of hundreds of batteries stored close together in the hold due to the risk of fire. Batteries have long been a worry on aircraft and the Samsung Galaxy S7 ordeal really highlighted the risks so the idea of putting all the batteries together in the hold seems questionable at best.
Thankfully, t he BBC have announced that the ban will not expanded to include flights from Europe to the US. This is great news and hopefully the other bans will be removed soon – although I can’t see that happening. I can only imagine the airlines affected by the ban will have seen the number of bookings to the US fall dramatically while other airlines such as Air India have reportedly noticed a big increase.
