Picking up a US Sim Card

Whenever I travel I like to pick up a local sim card if I don’t get free roaming in the country. Three Ireland allows you to use your included minutes/texts and up to 2GB data in several countries including UK, Sweden, Denmark and Hong Kong. With the new EU regulations on mobile phone roaming coming in soon, we should see the end of roaming chargers within the EU however using the phone outside the EU will continue to be very expensive. On Three Ireland 3Pay one MB of data will cost €5.08 when roaming in the US. (If you have a Three UK sim that includes Three Like Home its free…)

Thankfully in most countries it’s easy to pick up a local sim card. On my recent trip to America I picked up a prepaid Lycamobile sim card for $28 on Amazon which was delivered the same day by Amazon Prime. The sim came loaded with two months of unlimited Talk, Text and Data. Can’t really go wrong at the price.

If you do decide to purchase it, make sure you activate the sim card using the URL printed on the sticker. If you don’t do this, you most likely will only get one month free. You must have an unlocked mobile phone for this to work. I used the sim for talk and data throughout the holiday without issues and will be using it every time I go back to the States now.
