I somehow missed these deals on Secret Flyer over the Christmas period. There are currently two great deals in addition to the Ethiopian Flights to LAX.
Arriving: Newark airport, New Jersey
Dates: January – February 2017
Airline: United Airlines
United have in-seat entertainment and power in Economy and the first checked bag up to 23kg is free. As United departs from T2 in Dublin Airport, you will avail of the pre-clearance facilities. One thing people often don’t like however is that the flight is operated normally by a 757 which is a narrow body aircraft (there is only one aisle). However, United are temporarily using a 777 on the Dublin – Newark route so you should be on the larger aircraft. Perhaps this excess capacity is whats causing the special price.
Newark airport to Manhattan takes around 35-55 minutes in a Taxi/Uber and UberX costs around $55. There is also the a AirTrain which costs $12.50 from Newark airport to Penn St Station in Manhattan. This involves connecting but is straightforward and takes around 30 minutes.
Arriving: Bali, Indonesia
Dates: April – June 2017
Airline: KLM & Xiamen
Stops: Amsterdam & Xiamen
I’ve never taken this route so don’t have much I can add unfortunately. Xiamen is one of the cities that has the 72 hours visa free transfer policy so you will not need a Chinese visa.
Ethiopian Airlines fly from Addis Ababa airport to Washington, Toronto and Los Angeles with a stop in Dublin. Due to the altitude of Addis Ababa airport these flights cannot fly direct on the west bound journey. The flights from Toronto and Washington to Addis Ababa fly directly and do not stop in Dublin however, the Los Angeles flight stops in Dublin in both directions and Ethiopian have ‘Fifth Freedom Rights’ on this route. This means they can sell flights from Dublin – Los Angeles or Dublin to Addis Ababa for example. I have flown Ethiopian from Dublin to Delhi via Addis Ababa and I was very impressed with the service bar the shambolic Addis Ababa airport experience. Ethiopian operates a modern fleet of B787 with in seat power and entertainment.
There have been some great fares from Dublin to Los Angeles over the past few weeks reaching as low as €340 with stops. Ethiopian have just responded launching new reduced fares which seem to be valid from the middle of January until the middle of May – €380 return including all taxes and two checked bags.
There is a huge range of sites to use when looking for the cheapest flights. There are online travel agents such as lastminute.ie, ebookers.ie, kayak.ie, e-travel.ie, budgetair.ie, price comparison sites such as skyscanner.ie, momondo.ie, Google’s ITA Matrix Airfare Search (advanced) or Google Flights and of course directly on the airline’s websites. Sites such as SkyScanner and Google Flights have features that allow you to price up all destinations from an Airport to try and inspire you.
In addition to these sites, there are sites such as Secret Flying and Holiday Pirates that post error fares and other flight bargains. I find Secret Flying the better of the two as Holiday Pirates tends to focus more on UK departures and package holidays. As I post this, there are flights from Rome to Manila, Philippines for €294. You can get cheap Ryanair flights on the same days for €60 return, meaning Dublin to Philippines for ~€350. I know it will be a long journey and baggages is extra on Ryanair, but there are huge savings to be made. The cheapest flights shown on Sky Scanner for the same dates were €632. I travelled around South East Asia for 3 months with hand baggage only so it is possible not to be hit with baggage fees.
