I’ll admit this will turn into a rant. I moved to KBC current account but after less than one month of using it, I can’t stand it any more and I am in the process of moving fully to N26. I’m not sure why, but in my head KBC was a newish bank compared to the ‘older’ AIB, BOI, Ulster Bank etc and therefore would have more modern and user friendly online banking facilities. However, I’ve found their online banking close to unbearable. Most of the issues are very small but they do quickly add up. It could just be me and everyone else loves their online banking.
Logging in is an ordeal
With both my AIB and BOI current accounts I enter in my registration number and then for AIB I am asked for 3 out of 6 digits from my personal access code. BOI will ask for my date of birth and then 3 out of the 6 digits from my personal access code. Logging into either of these online banking accounts takes less than 10 seconds. KBC on the other hand require you to use a digital key to log in. I understand this is to increase account security but the implementation of it is very poor.
After opening a KBC extra current account, I received an account opening letter along with the new account brochure. Both of these make reference to another letter I should receive containing information to set up online banking. After waiting over a week no further information arrived and I never got any confirmation the account was now fully operational after the issue with my documents. So I decided to ring KBC and ask them what the story was. I was then told ‘Oh ye, you have to ring us to get online banking set up, we don’t send out letters’. Now in fairness the agent was very helpful but its just another instance of KBC giving out the wrong information. Anyway, after going through all the security questions I was texted a activation code and given the username over the phone to be used in the app.
After looking around for a new current account I decided on the KBC Extra current account. If you lodge €2,500 per month you get fee-free banking. The balance can change throughout the money so I will set up a standing order from my savings account into KBC and back out again the next day to get over that requirement. I have had a student current account with them in the past – I signed up to get a €100 One4All voucher for free but never used the account. I closed it a while back. One thing I do is I try to actively avoid companies that annoy me with advertising – Aer Lingus’s ‘Aer Bridge’, NoNonsense, The Tesco ‘Here’s to the Hosts’ and KBC ‘I live a modern sort of life‘. However, I decided I’d give KBC another go and am already beginning to regret it.
