Vodafone X – Great Prepay Deal

I recently needed to move from Three and after reviewing the options chose to move to Lycamobile. After a month using Lycamobile I decided to look around again as I was having issues with dropped connection and slow internet speeds. I came across Vodafone X from a boards.ie thread, somehow I missed it when going through all the networks. This is a student deal open to anyone with a valid student card or who is between 16-25. Vodafone have confirmed that once you sign up to the deal you will remain on the plan until you switch to another plan even if you no longer meet the signup requirements and the full data allowance will be included under the EU roaming.

To sign up you need to verify your age by linking your Facebook account with Vodafone or else go in store with your student ID. The boards.ie thread shows you exactly what to do, in order to verify your age or at least verify your pretend age

There are three options to choose from:

Vodafone X Weekend

20GB of 4G data
100 minutes to any networks
Unlimited Texts to any networks

&

Unlimited calls, texts and data from 3pm Fridays until 11.59PM Sundays.

Signing Up

As I needed a new Vodafone Sim I ordered one for free online on a Monday. It was dispatched on Tuesday and delivered by Express Post on Wednesday. When ordering online I selected to port my number from Lycamobile to Vodafone on Friday at 12pm. On the Thursday before I was sent a text message confirming that the port will happen in 24 hours. Then at 11.45am on Friday I received another text from Vodafone confirming the port will commence shortly. Once my Lycamobile sim stopped working I put in my Vodafone sim.

I then went to Vodafone X and entered in my number to receive a code via text to confirm ownership of the number to activate the offer. It never arrived and after requesting a few more times it came up with an error. “Too many requests. Please try again later”. Even after waiting for an hour it would show me this message. I went on live chat and they activated the offer via live chat for me so I never needed to verify my age, although I do legitimately meet the requirements. I think what happened the port hadn’t fully completed so the texts were lost. I had been too eager. Either way, once the agent on live chat confirmed I was set up, I topped up online and sure enough the offer activated.

First Impressions

I have only been with Vodafone for a couple of hours now but have been very impressed. Their CS was friendly and quick to resolve the issue on live chat. The coverage and speed has been bullet proof. Obviously it has only been a couple of hours but so far it’s looking like a big improvement on Three and Lycamobile. I’ve pasted a 3G speedtest with Vodafone below, at the same location I was getting around around 2Mbps with Lycamobile.
